Fergalicious F r a n k l i n

Written by Jacqueline Hamilton

When is the last time Franklin has seen a major celebrity? We’ve had a visit from the one hit wonder, Jin the Asian rapper, but even that was nearly two years ago. Well thanks to Ms. Wiley, Franklin will be seeing celebrities a lot sooner than anyone could’ve imagined. Franklin High School was entered into the “Verizon Fergie Fashion Trendz” contest. The contest rules were simple: dress to impersonate Fergie’s fashion sense as closely as possible and show it off to the Verizon representatives who would be traveling to participating schools. Each school will be rated on overall Fergie fashion, the school with the highest average rating would win a personal V.I.P. performance from Fergie herself.

With Franklin going up against schools from California, Arizona, and Colorado, the competition was assumed to be tough. When Friday, April 20 came around, Franklin came out in full force.

“I wasn’t really surprised that Franklin had such great participation because Franklin’s great when it comes to fashion,” said junior Diana Ratsamee about Franklin’s student involvement in the contest. Around 45 people participated by taking pictures and many more dressed up.

Over the weekend votes were tallied and Franklin came out on top. With the title of most “Fergalicious” high school under our belt, what’s the next step for FHS? Tuesday May 8th is the concert date and although details are still fuzzy, the assumption is it will take place during the school day. There will be giveaways as well as a sneak preview of Fergie’s new fashion label.
“I think Fergie will be real chill, kind of like Ms. Morningstar. Fun, but cool like a teenager,” said junior Malee Ha. Fergie’s personality is currently unknown, but any fan of her music can tell you that if she is any reflection of what she sings, then we’re in for a show.

The concert is one of the events that marks that the year is coming to a close. With Prom being the weekend before the concert and Quaker Day proceeding closely behind, the school is looking at lifting spirits.
“This school year has had a lot of ups and down, so this concert will have a positive affect on the social climate of the school and boost spirits for the end of the year as well as the following year,” said ASB Advisor Mr. Shearer.

It’s safe to say that Fergie’s arrival will build excitement and high anticipation. “I think it’s great that she’s coming because it’s a school wide thing. It’s not something one group benefits. It’s an all school activity and that’s what we need right now,” said Ha. Congrats Franklin! You’ve earned the right to be Fergalicious!
