Education Vs. Fashion
Written by Sylarina Powell
From stuck up girls to trash talkers, Franklin High School has been called it all. For many years the most heard of rumor is, that Franklin is all about fashion. Students at Franklin are portrayed as these fashion fanatics who worry more about what they and/or what their peers are wearing rather than their school and homework. The time as come, and it’s about time that Franklin let all the haters know what we’re about.
From a state winning basketball team, dance posse team, and mock trial team, there is more to Franklin then what the outsiders think. Brains and style can be carried hand and hand. Other Seattle Public High schools haven’t figured that out, and so they continue to hate on the FHS population. Senior Lanese Lovings, stated “People who concern themselves with fashion know to keep it outside the classroom when at school,” when asked about the concentration of education verses fashion. Lovings felt that fashion isn’t all that FHS students concern themselves with, because “if you got then you got if, you don’t then you don’t.” Freshmen Mykael Walker, felt otherwise. He felt that “in a way it’s true. Franklin high school is fashion school.” Walker continued to say that “ Not dressing a certain way can cause you to get clowned on.” that scenario won’t be a problem to the new student and, member of dance posse because, he has his own personal style. Do FHS students really clown on what their peers are not wearing and what they are?
Teacher Ms. Jocelyn Mitchell, said “FHS students concern themselves more with education.” She felt “ being known as a fashion school is in the past, and that students are starting to understand being that closed mined gets you no where.” For those of you who do think fashion is everything, take Ms. Mitchell’s advice and open up to your surroundings. Not everyone cares about rocking the latest jewelry and sporting the newest Jordans.
On movies, in high school, there are those students who are popular, spending their time worrying about looking the best, and then those who care less known as the unpopular. “ Fashion and popularity does come hand and hand,” stated Lovings, “people can be popular because, they are true to their personal style.” Personal style is great to have. It lets students have their time to show what they can do with what they have. Ms. Mitchell was asked the same question as Lovings. She stated “ fashion and popularity do come hand and hand. I think both are superficial things that students tend to get caught up in.” High school is a time for memories, learning experience’s, and I guess fashion consultants.
With all this concern with fashion and education, how much time, and money goes into what? Senior Tim Dailey, replied that “I spend one hour per day on picking out my clothes, and about one hour on my homework. Dailey admitted that a lot of his money is spent on clothes, because it takes more money for clothes then school supplies. Walker too stated that more of his time spent towards his clothing. “ I spend about an hour and a half on my homework, and two hours and a half towards my clothes.” Let’s hope that with all the time he spends towards his styling that his grades are together. For a lot of under classmen, it will be awhile until they understand what is more important. When they get into their senior year they will understand the importance of education and, why some seniors careless as they get into their fourth year. Being around the same students everyday, for the past three years gets played out and, you realize there is no one here to impress. Dailey said “ when I get to college money will still be spent, but I’ll come at it in a different way.”
